There is a dialogue from one of my comfort movies that resonates with me : “A hero’s greatness is determined by how many obstacles he surmounts. The tougher the obstacle, the greater he is. (Son of Satyamurthy, 2015)
Today in this 3rd and final part of the Royal Match Breakdown, I’ll list out the obstacles I faced in the 100 levels of play. Obstacles are a necessary mechanic for any game to be interesting. Mechanics are any elements that define how a player interacts with the game. If the obstacles throughout the game are the same and behave similarly, the game gets boring quickly. The obstacles you encounter must be such that it challenges you to play more.
Before I take you through the obstacles I encountered in Royal Match, do check out the 1st and 2nd part of the Royal Match Breakdown I did here and here. It will also be more of a listicle than an analysis.
Obstacles Encountered
Box
Bush + Grass Statue
Bush
Cupboard
Grass Patch
Honey
Mailbox
Owl Statue
Royal Egg
Safe
Sand
These obstacles can be divided into 2 types:
those that can a single match to clear - sand, honey, grass, royal egg, box
those that require multiple matches to clear - safe, cupboard, grass statue
The action of clearing them is not too different but by looking different and behaving differently the freshness of the game is maintained.
As I said, this is more of a listicle than an analysis. Next up I’ll be covering the beautiful indie puzzle game - Bloom. Do let me know if you have any games that you would like featured.
Ciao!
